Laser marking promotional products: Pens, flasks and keyrings

Plan personalised product production around surface compatibility, artwork, cylindrical positioning and frequent order changes.

Promotional orders vary in more than quantity. One customer wants a small logo; another needs a different name on every item. Equipment selection therefore needs to consider both product variety and artwork preparation. A single processing setup should not be assumed to work equally well on pens, flasks and keyrings.

Identify the surface before selecting the process

A metallic-looking pen may have a plastic body, while one flask model may be supplied with several coatings. Obtain material, coating and colour information from the supplier. Test an actual production item. A successful result on one sample does not establish compatibility with every coating or subsequent product batch.

Prepare artwork at the final marking size

Use an appropriate vector file instead of a low-resolution screenshot. Examine fine lines, narrow spaces and small lettering at their actual production dimensions. Where practical, obtain customer approval using a marked sample rather than only a screen preview. Check personalised name lists and character support before starting the batch.

Plan positioning for cylindrical products

A small logo on one side of a flask differs from a design extending around its circumference. Evaluate the diameter, design coverage and focus conditions to determine whether a rotary axis or dedicated fixture is required. Confirm accessory compatibility and inclusion in the quotation rather than assuming that every system supports the same arrangement.

Understand small-order handling costs

For a ten-piece order, preparation and sample approval may account for much of the workload. Store approved artwork, product references and validated settings together for repeat orders. Inspect the first piece again when the supplier or batch changes. Include unpacking, loading and repacking when setting throughput targets; laser processing time alone can give a misleading impression of capacity.

Build a practical trial list

• Real samples and coating information for the three most frequently ordered products.
• The smallest logo, longest name and examples containing special characters.
• Daily order volume and typical batch size per product.
• Required appearance, alignment and acceptable complete cycle time.
